Trump won’t testify as defence and prosecution rest cases

Former President Donald Trump will not be testifying in his impeachment trial, as both the defence and prosecution have rested their cases. Trump’s legal team argued that his statements are protected by the First Amendment and that he cannot be held responsible for the actions of his supporters.

The prosecution, led by House impeachment managers, presented video evidence and testimony from witnesses to argue that Trump’s rhetoric and false claims of election fraud incited the violent mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6th.

With both sides having concluded their arguments, the Senate will now deliberate and vote on whether to convict or acquit Trump of incitement of insurrection. A two-thirds majority is required for conviction.
